Welcome!
In conjunction with coordination and project management provided by the Tidewater Soil and Water Conservation District, the York River Basin's seven Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) seek to capitalize on the unique opportunity that the Chesapeake Bay Tributary Nutrient Reduction Strategy process represents, specifically in terms of current and future rational watershed-based planning using a sub-watershed unit accounting system to measure and report previous, current, and future nutrient reduction activities "on the ground" or planned and pending within the York watershed.
As to their role in Virginia's tributary strategy process, the York SWCDs look to assist 11 local governments and 6 Planning District Commissions in raising public awareness throughout the watershed, and in identifying and informing key citizens and community activists and leaders to effectively review and comment upon pending strategy recommendations that will come from the Commonwealth. York Soil and Water Conservation Districts advocate that their close contact with grassroots organizations, landowners, and lay citizens throughout the watershed provides them with a unique capacity for effective outreach via a coordinated and collaborative approach.
Finally, while this effort focuses on the role of seven York Districts and local grassroots organizations in support of Virginia's tributary nutrient reduction strategy process, the larger long-term potential for innovative watershed-based planning and management in the York shall continue to evidence new challenges and opportunities beyond this specific project implementation.
We view our role as that of delivering watershed-wide public outreach in support of local governments and Planning District Commissions throughout the York, and in a manner consistent with ongoing or planned outreach efforts undertaken by others. We solicit and welcome your counsel and suggestions as we move forward in this effort!
